French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to pay an official State visit to Nigeria later this fall, according to the French Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier.
The ambassador made the announcement during France's National Day celebration in Abuja, describing the visit as a significant step in strengthening the strategic partnership between Nigeria and France. He said the trip comes two years after President Bola Tinubu visited Paris on a State visit.
Fonbaustier explained that both leaders will review the progress made in bilateral relations and discuss new areas of cooperation that will benefit both countries.
He emphasized that Nigeria and France enjoy a relationship built on equality, mutual respect, and non-interference, with both nations working together to promote economic development, job creation, environmental protection, democracy, and the rule of law.
The ambassador highlighted growing economic cooperation, citing recent business partnerships involving French companies in Nigeria, as well as ongoing collaboration in agriculture through the French Development Agency to improve food security and agricultural value chains, particularly in northern Nigeria and across the ECOWAS region.
On security, he said Nigeria and France remain committed to combating terrorism and supporting regional efforts to strengthen security capabilities.
Fonbaustier also noted that Macron's interest in Africa was influenced by the six months he spent in Nigeria as a student more than two decades ago, an experience he said helped shape the French president's vision for Africa.
Macron's upcoming visit is expected to further deepen diplomatic, economic, and security ties between Nigeria and France.
