The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared Thursday, July 16, 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448AH.
The announcement followed the inability of moon-sighting committees across Nigeria to confirm the sighting of the new Safar crescent on Tuesday, July 14, which corresponded to the 29th day of Muharram 1448AH.
In a statement issued by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs and signed by its Chairman, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the council said no authenticated report of the crescent moon was received from any part of the country.
As a result, Wednesday, July 15, was declared the 30th and final day of Muharram 1448AH, completing the month in line with Islamic tradition.
Based on the report, the Sultan approved the commencement of the new Islamic month on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The declaration serves as the official guide for Muslims across Nigeria in observing religious activities and events associated with the Islamic calendar.
