The Liberian government has repatriated its first group of 17 nationals from South Africa following rising anti-immigrant violence and unrest in the country.
According to Liberia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the returnees arrived at Roberts International Airport near Monrovia on Wednesday after voluntarily requesting to return home due to fears for their safety.
The repatriation exercise was coordinated by the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Officials said the group consisted of some of the most vulnerable Liberians affected by the ongoing attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
South Africa has experienced weeks of anti-immigrant protests, with some demonstrators accusing foreign nationals of taking jobs and straining public resources. The unrest has prompted several African governments to evacuate thousands of their citizens.
Malawi recently announced it had repatriated about 38,000 nationals within a month, while Zimbabwe said more than 21,000 of its citizens had returned home. Uganda has also brought back around 1,100 citizens, with hundreds of Nigerians, Ghanaians, and Mozambicans also leaving South Africa.
Liberian authorities said they will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to citizens who wish to return home.
