Armed bandits have abducted a school principal, a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc official and four students after attacking Government Secondary School (GSS) Opada-Olowa in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State during an ongoing examination.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2026, causing panic as the gunmen stormed the school while students were writing their exams.
Security agencies immediately launched a joint search-and-rescue operation and began tracking the kidnappers. One of the abducted students has since been rescued, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining victims.
Authorities have intensified bush-combing operations, intelligence gathering and surveillance across the area in a bid to locate the kidnappers' hideout.
A community leader, Sunday Alkali, said residents were relaxing outdoors when the armed men suddenly appeared.
According to him, the attackers initially withdrew after seeing many people outside but later returned and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee.
Residents said they only realized the school had been targeted after the shooting stopped. They found examination papers scattered across classrooms and the school compound, while students and school staff were nowhere to be seen.
The abducted victims were identified as the school principal, Mr. Nyada Daniel, the NECO supervisor, Mr. Solomon Audu, and four students.
Sources said the kidnappers later contacted some of the victims' relatives, demanding ransom for their release.
Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining captives and bring the perpetrators to justice.
