Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is expected to return to Senegal on Friday for his first public visit since leaving office, as he continues his campaign to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.
Sall, who served as Senegal's president from 2012 to 2024, said his visit is part of consultations linked to his candidacy for the UN's top position. During the trip, he is scheduled to meet with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye before departing the country later the same day. Sall also expressed his intention to return to Senegal in the future to meet with supporters.
His return comes after a politically turbulent period. Sall remains a controversial figure following his failed attempt to postpone Senegal's 2024 presidential election, a move that sparked deadly protests before being overturned by the country's Constitutional Council.
The former president has also denied allegations related to the country's public finances after auditors accused his administration of understating debt and budget deficit figures.
The United Nations is expected to appoint its next Secretary-General later this year for a five-year term beginning on January 1, 2027. Sall is among five candidates seeking the position. If elected, he would become the third African to lead the UN, following Boutros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt and Kofi Annan of Ghana.
During his presidency, Sall oversaw Senegal's emergence as an oil- and gas-producing nation, marking a significant milestone in the country's economic development.
