The United States has carried out a fresh wave of air and naval strikes on military targets in southern Iran, marking another escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the seven-hour operation targeted missile and drone sites, naval facilities, and coastal defence systems near the Strait of Hormuz. Washington said the attacks were aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels.
The operation came as the US also resumed a naval blockade on vessels travelling to and from Iranian ports.
In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that oil and gas export routes serving the United States and its allies could become targets if the conflict continues. The IRGC also declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until what it described as "America's aggression" ends.
Iranian media reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Qeshm, Hengam and other southern areas, while air defence systems were activated in several provinces. Iranian officials also claimed their forces launched retaliatory drone attacks on US military positions in the region, including bases in Jordan and Kuwait.
Meanwhile, Kuwait's Defence Ministry said it intercepted Iranian drones after loud explosions were heard across the country.
The escalating military confrontation has also affected global energy markets, with Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil prices rising amid fears of supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes.
Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions remain uncertain as both sides continue military operations across the region.
