More than 60 members of the US Congress have called on Israel to ease restrictions on Palestinian cancer patients in Gaza so they can access urgent medical care in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The letter, signed by 51 members of the House of Representatives and 11 senators, was sent to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Signatories include Senators Bernie Sanders and Chris Van Hollen, along with Representatives Madeleine Dean and Greg Casar.
The lawmakers are urging the US administration to facilitate medical evacuations for children with cancer and their caregivers, and to ensure they are allowed to return to Gaza afterward.
Human rights advocates say the situation has become increasingly dire due to the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system during the ongoing war. The World Health Organization estimates that most hospitals in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, leaving thousands of cancer patients without adequate treatment.
Aid groups also warn that delays in evacuation approvals have contributed to preventable deaths, as many patients cannot access specialized care outside the territory.
The proposal includes creating a medical corridor linking Gaza to hospitals in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where facilities such as Augusta Victoria Hospital are prepared to receive patients.
Lawmakers argue that urgent medical evacuation is now the only viable option for many patients, especially children, as Gaza’s remaining health infrastructure continues to deteriorate.
