A federal judge in the United States has ordered the release of Salah Sarsour, a Muslim community leader and Palestinian rights advocate who was detained by immigration authorities.
Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, said his detention was retaliation for his public support for Palestine. He had been held by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency for nearly three months.
Judge James Patrick Hanlon ruled that Sarsour had presented a serious claim that he was targeted because of speech protected under the US Constitution’s First Amendment, which protects freedom of expression.
The judge rejected arguments that national security concerns could automatically override free-speech rights, saying the government must respect constitutional protections.
Sarsour, who has lived in the US for about 32 years, welcomed the ruling, calling it a victory for free speech.
“I am so relieved to be with my family,” he said after his release.
US authorities had accused Sarsour of immigration violations and claimed he failed to disclose an earlier conviction by an Israeli military court. He denied the accusations.
Civil rights groups criticized his detention, saying it was part of a wider crackdown on pro-Palestinian activists in the United States.
The case comes amid ongoing debate in the US over immigration enforcement, national security claims, and the limits of political expression.
