US President Donald Trump has said the world will soon know whether a planned agreement with Iran will go ahead, suggesting that the deal could still collapse.
Speaking to reporters at the G7 Summit in France, Trump said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at ending the US-Israel war with Iran, scheduled for Friday, was not guaranteed.
Trump warned that the United States could resume bombing Iran if Tehran does not “behave.”
“I think it will be done,” Trump said, while adding that agreements can sometimes fail even when they appear certain.
The proposed agreement between Washington and Tehran is expected to stop fighting on all fronts, lift the US naval blockade, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.
Officials said the initial agreement would open the way for 60 days of negotiations on major issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, regional influence, and the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
US officials said the MOU was already digitally signed, but both sides could still withdraw before the final signing.
The agreement reportedly includes plans to ease sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities.
It also includes a proposed reconstruction and economic development plan for Iran worth at least $300 billion, though Trump said it would depend on Iran’s actions.
The secrecy surrounding the deal has faced criticism from US lawmakers, with some demanding that the full agreement be released publicly.
Trump also praised Iran’s leadership, describing them as “smart,” and claimed the negotiations could lead to a new nuclear deal stronger than the 2015 agreement.
He also criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military actions in Lebanon, saying they could threaten the emerging US-Iran agreement.
