More than 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since a US-brokered “ceasefire” agreement between Hamas and Israel was reached in October, while the humanitarian crisis in the territory continues to worsen.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks across Gaza have killed 1,005 Palestinians since the agreement was announced.
“We mourn as Gaza reaches another tragic milestone. Thousands of people who believed the worst was over are still burying their loved ones,” said Fikr Shalltoot, Gaza director at Medical Aid for Palestinians.
The ceasefire reduced large-scale fighting, but a deal on the next phase — including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and Hamas disarmament — has not been reached.
Since October, Israel has expanded its control inside Gaza and now controls about 64 percent of the Gaza Strip, compared with 53 percent outlined in the agreement.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that families in eastern Gaza City were recently forced to leave their homes after Israeli forces marked a further expansion of a designated military boundary.
The ceasefire was also expected to allow reconstruction and rebuilding of Gaza’s healthcare system. However, only 20 out of 37 hospitals remain partially operational, and no hospital is fully functioning, according to OCHA.
Aid groups say restrictions on humanitarian access continue to worsen conditions, while Gaza faces severe shortages of medicine and essential supplies.
Since the beginning of the war in October, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed, large parts of Gaza have been destroyed, and nearly 1.9 million people have been displaced.
