Spanish politician and European Parliament member has criticised the European Union’s response to the Middle East crisis, calling US President “Mr Genocide” during a European Parliament debate on the US-Iran peace agreement.
The incident took place on 16 June during discussions about the EU’s role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. Montero questioned whether Europe had any reason to celebrate the recently announced agreement.
Addressing EU foreign policy chief , Montero asked what Europe had achieved, saying: “Can we celebrate that we have prevented a genocide? Have we stopped an illegal aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran? Have we stopped the occupation of Lebanon?”
She then referred to Trump’s birthday on 14 June and said: “You celebrate Donald Trump’s birthday? Then let’s sing to him.”
Montero sang in English: “Happy birthday to Trump. Happy birthday, Mr Genocide.”
The Spanish lawmaker later shared the video online with the caption “Happy Birthday to Trump.”
The debate followed the announcement of a US-Iran ceasefire agreement aimed at ending recent tensions between Washington and Tehran. The deal reportedly includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, and possible sanctions relief linked to Iran meeting certain commitments.
Trump said Iran had agreed not to develop nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened. Meanwhile, Kallas described the agreement as a possible step toward reducing tensions, saying there were reasons for “cautious optimism.”
Other European lawmakers also reacted to the conflict. Some described the agreement as positive news, while criticising the wider consequences of the war on regional stability, global trade, and security.
Montero maintained that Europe had nothing to celebrate, arguing that the conflict had caused serious suffering and instability.
