Iran’s Red Crescent Society has signed an agreement with a Russian state-owned helicopter company to purchase 20 helicopters aimed at improving the country’s emergency response, air rescue, and logistics capabilities.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in Moscow by the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Pirhossein Kolivand, and Nikolai Kolesov, the director general of Russian Helicopters.
Kolivand described the deal as a major step for Iran’s relief organisation, saying the helicopters would strengthen the country’s aerial rescue fleet.
He said a final contract for four of the helicopters has already been completed, with deliveries expected before Iran’s New Year celebrations in March 2027.
According to Kolivand, the helicopters will be equipped with modern technology, including night-vision systems that allow operations after dark. They will also have firefighting equipment and medical emergency capabilities.
The purchase is part of Iran’s efforts to improve disaster preparedness and strengthen emergency services, especially in remote and disaster-prone areas.
Iran and Russia have continued expanding cooperation in sectors including energy, transportation, and defence amid Western sanctions.
