New Zealand Launches Six-Month Job Search Visa for International Graduates

The New Zealand government has unveiled a new six-month work visa aimed at helping international graduates transition from education into employment.

The new Short-term Graduate Work Visa, announced by immigration authorities, will come into effect on November 16, 2026. The initiative is part of broader reforms designed to align the country's immigration policies with labour market demands and skills shortages.

Under the new arrangement, eligible international students will be allowed to remain in New Zealand for up to six months after completing their studies to search for employment opportunities. The visa is intended to provide graduates with a pathway into the workforce and potentially lead to longer-term work permits such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

To qualify, applicants must have completed an approved qualification at Levels 5 to 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) following at least 24 weeks of full-time study within the country. Applicants must also demonstrate access to at least NZD 5,000 in financial support, satisfy health requirements, and submit their application within three months of their student visa's expiration.

Immigration officials stated that the visa will be issued only once to an individual and cannot be renewed. Holders will not be permitted to establish businesses or sponsor dependent family members during their stay. In addition, former recipients of the Post Study Work Visa will not be eligible for the new scheme.

The government also announced expanded eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa programme. Graduates who hold a Level 7 graduate diploma alongside a bachelor's degree will now be able to qualify under revised regulations.
