The Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State has revoked the operating licences of all private schools within its jurisdiction following allegations that a teacher sexually abused four female pupils at a private school.
The decision was announced after an emergency review meeting aimed at improving school safety and tightening oversight of private education institutions.
According to local authorities, the action was triggered by the closure of Al-Hadeed Private School in Inusawa, where a teacher, identified as “Uncle Kamal,” was accused of raping four underage pupils reportedly from the same family.
The suspect has been arraigned before a magistrate court in Kano and remanded in custody, with the case adjourned to June 9, 2026.
The Education Councillor of the local government, Abdullahi Wakili, said all private school owners in the area must now appear before a screening committee for fresh evaluation as part of new safety measures.
He added that the policy is intended to restore public confidence in schools and ensure stronger protection for pupils, stressing that educational institutions must remain safe environments for children.
Local government chairman Tijjani Amiru Bilyaminu directed the sweeping review as part of broader efforts to address security and welfare concerns in schools across the area.
