Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly after defeating Cyprus’ Ambassador Andreas Kakouris in a tightly contested secret ballot.
Rahman secured 99 votes out of 190 cast, finishing ahead of his rival by eight votes. No abstentions or invalid ballots were recorded in the election held at UN headquarters in New York.
His one-year term will begin on September 8, and he will oversee the General Assembly at a time of rising global tensions and increasing pressure on multilateral institutions. A key responsibility during his tenure will be helping guide the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General.
In his acceptance remarks, Rahman acknowledged growing challenges facing the UN, including declining trust in international cooperation and difficulties in reaching consensus among member states. He stressed the need to strengthen confidence in the organisation’s ability to deliver on its mandate.
The presidency of the UN General Assembly rotates among regional groups, and the Asia-Pacific bloc was next in line for the 81st session. Rahman, a career diplomat since 1979, has previously served in senior UN roles as well as Bangladesh’s national security adviser and foreign minister.
Outgoing Assembly President Annalena Baerbock noted that global diplomacy is under increasing strain, saying the role of the presidency now requires more active leadership than in the past.
The UN General Assembly remains the world’s most representative multilateral forum, where all 193 member states have equal voting power, even though its resolutions are generally non-binding.
