The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an annual gathering of journalists and politicians in Washington, has been postponed and rescheduled for July 24 following a security incident that disrupted the original event.
The dinner was originally set for April 25 but was cancelled after an armed suspect attempted to breach security at the venue, prompting an exchange of gunfire and the evacuation of attendees, including US President Donald Trump.
Organisers later confirmed the event will now go ahead, with both Trump and the White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang saying the rescheduling sends a message that violence will not derail public events.
President Donald Trump welcomed the decision, describing it as a sign of resilience and saying he has accepted his invitation to attend.
However, press freedom advocates have raised concerns that the event could become a platform for Trump to criticise the media, noting his long history of tensions with journalists.
The dinner, traditionally a celebration of press freedom, is expected to proceed at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, DC, with entertainment replacing the usual comedic segment this year.
