British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged the public to remain calm after violent protests broke out following the murder conviction of an 18-year-old student whose treatment by police during his final moments has sparked national outrage.
Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in Southampton earlier this week, leaving 11 officers injured. The unrest followed the sentencing of 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, who was found guilty of murdering student Henry Nowak and falsely claiming the victim had racially attacked him.
Footage released during the trial showed officers handcuffing Nowak while he was fatally wounded, with the teenager repeatedly saying he could not breathe as police initially dismissed his condition. The incident has triggered widespread debate in the UK about policing standards and racial bias.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, saying there is “no justification for disorder” and warning against those attempting to inflame tensions for political gain.
“This is a time for serious work, not rage,” Starmer said, rejecting claims of systemic “two-tier policing” in Britain.
The case has also become politically charged, with opposition figure Nigel Farage calling for public “cold rage” in response to the killing, warning that public anger could escalate if trust in law enforcement continues to decline.
Authorities confirmed that investigations into police conduct are ongoing, while police leadership has pledged a review of operational guidelines, particularly those related to how officers respond to allegations of racial motivation during incidents.
Officials from Hampshire Police have already issued an apology for aspects of their handling of the case, and several officers are now part of an independent review.
The government has stressed that lessons will be learned but insists that the incident should not be used to deepen political or social divisions in the country.
