Israeli authorities have deported French journalist Alice Froussard, who is known for her criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and its policies in the occupied West Bank.
The deportation took place on Wednesday, although Israeli officials did not initially provide an official reason for the action. Later, Israeli Minister for Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, claimed on social media that Froussard supported Hamas and had argued that the October 7, 2023 attacks should be viewed within a broader historical context.
France's Foreign Ministry confirmed it was providing consular assistance to Froussard but acknowledged that Israel has the legal authority to deny entry or deport foreign nationals.
The incident has renewed concerns about press freedom and media access during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Foreign Press Association criticized the deportation, noting that Israeli authorities had previously approved Froussard's travel to the country.
In a statement, the association warned that the move reflected a growing trend of authorities rejecting journalists whose reporting is perceived as unfavorable.
Israel has faced international criticism for limiting foreign media access to Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023. International reporters have largely been barred from entering the territory independently, while local Palestinian journalists have continued to cover the war under difficult and dangerous conditions.
Press freedom organizations and media advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about restrictions on reporting from the conflict zone and the safety of journalists working there.
The deportation of Froussard is expected to further intensify debate over media freedom, access to conflict areas, and the treatment of journalists covering the Israel-Gaza war.
