A South African political activist has sparked controversy after openly expressing hostility towards Nigerians amid the recent evacuation of foreign nationals from the country following renewed xenophobic tensions.
Thabile Sibeko, who identified herself as president of the Inizwe Nathi Party, said she was pleased to see Nigerians leaving South Africa. Speaking in a video shared by a local media outlet, Sibeko accused some Nigerians of contributing to social problems, including drug-related crimes, which she claimed had negatively affected South African communities.
Her remarks came as Nigeria began evacuating citizens affected by the latest wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the first group of 258 evacuated Nigerians arrived safely in Lagos on Thursday. They were received by Sola Enikanolaiye, who reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
According to Enikanolaiye, no Nigerian should face discrimination, violence, or fear because of their nationality. He described the evacuation as evidence of the government's dedication to the welfare and safety of its citizens overseas.
The returnees were accompanied by officials of the Nigerian Mission in South Africa led by Temitope Alexander Ajayi.
The minister said the government would continue engaging South African authorities to ensure the protection of Nigerian nationals and address the underlying causes of recurring xenophobic incidents.
He added that the evacuees would undergo documentation, profiling, and medical screening before being provided temporary accommodation and reunited with their families.
Nigerian authorities also disclosed that additional evacuation flights are expected in the coming days as efforts continue to bring affected citizens back home safely.
The latest developments have renewed concerns over xenophobia in South Africa and the safety of African migrants living and working in the country.
