Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has announced that the presidents of Iran and the United States have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries and lifting the US naval blockade against Iran.
The agreement was signed digitally after both sides finalized the text of the deal. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the decision to have the highest-ranking officials sign the document was made to strengthen commitment and make any violation more costly.
Baghaei said the implementation of the agreement would be more difficult than reaching the deal itself, warning that Iran would closely monitor US compliance.
“Signing the agreement does not mean we have forgotten the past or the lessons of the war,” he said, adding that Tehran would respond if Washington failed to meet its commitments.
Nuclear Talks Delayed
The Iranian official said nuclear negotiations would not be the immediate focus. Instead, the priority was ending the war.
He explained that the two sides would have 60 days from the start of the agreement to discuss nuclear issues and sanctions removal.
Baghaei stressed that Iran’s missile capabilities would not be part of any negotiations.
“Iran’s defense capabilities will not be discussed with any party,” he said.
Oil Sanctions and Hormuz
Iran said the lifting of oil sanctions had begun, insisting that the country must be able to sell oil freely and receive revenues without restrictions on transport or insurance.
Baghaei also said Iran and Oman were working on a new management arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz, promising safe commercial passage while maintaining Iran’s authority over the waterway.
Lebanon Ceasefire
The spokesman said the agreement also addressed Lebanon, emphasizing that Iran considered the ceasefire there as important as ending the conflict involving Iran.
He warned that continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon would be viewed as a violation of commitments under the agreement.
Iran Promises to Pursue War Crimes Claims
Baghaei said Iran would continue documenting alleged crimes committed during the war and would use international channels to seek accountability.
He described Iran as stronger after the conflict, saying the war had increased the country’s military and diplomatic strength.
The MoU follows months of negotiations mediated by Pakistan and supported by regional countries. The agreement includes an end to military operations, lifting of the blockade, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, and further talks on sanctions, nuclear issues, reconstruction, and monitoring mechanisms.
