Israeli authorities have released Hassan Yousef, a senior Hamas leader and one of the group’s founding members, after he spent more than two years in detention without trial, according to his family.
His son, Owais Yousef, said the 71-year-old was freed near Hebron in the occupied West Bank and later taken to a hospital in Ramallah, where he currently lives.
Hassan Yousef is known as a long-time political figure in the Palestinian territories and helped establish Hamas in the 1980s alongside other founders linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
He had been held under Israel’s administrative detention system since October 2023, shortly after the Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing Gaza conflict. The system allows Israeli authorities to detain individuals for renewable periods without formal charges.
Israel says administrative detention is used for security reasons to prevent suspected attacks while investigations continue. However, human rights organizations have criticized the practice, arguing that it denies detainees due process.
Yousef has been detained multiple times in the past, including a previous period of administrative detention that ended in 2020.
His family confirmed he was taken to hospital after his release, but Israeli authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the details of his freedom or conditions surrounding it.
The development comes amid continued tensions in the region, where arrests and military operations have increased since the escalation of conflict in Gaza in 2023.
