G7 leaders have gathered in France for talks dominated by the recent US-Iran agreement and efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the summit in Évian-les-Bains, said the priority was to secure a “solid and serious agreement” with Iran.
The leaders are expected to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. Macron said France and the United Kingdom were prepared to support a maritime security mission to help restore safe passage.
US President Donald Trump said the strait would be “completely open” by Friday, when a formal agreement with Iran is expected to be signed in Geneva.
The preliminary agreement, digitally signed earlier, is expected to create a 60-day negotiation period covering Iran’s nuclear programme, including uranium enrichment, and possible sanctions relief.
The G7 includes the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union.
Leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Egypt are also attending discussions focused on regional stability.
Ukraine War Also a Major Focus
The summit will also address the Russia-Ukraine war, with European leaders hoping to persuade President Trump that previous peace proposals were too favourable to Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attending a session focused on “building peace in Ukraine” and may hold talks with Trump.
European leaders say they want to continue supporting Ukraine while increasing pressure on Russia through sanctions.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Ukraine had strengthened its military capabilities, while Russia was facing growing economic pressure from sanctions.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled as both sides continue military operations.
Trump said he had spoken with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin and believed both sides were willing to explore a possible solution.
