The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the arrest of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following his failure to appear in court for his trial.
Sowore was scheduled to begin his defence in a two-count cybercrime charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a social media post in which he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”
The defendant had chosen to represent himself after his lawyers withdrew from the case. However, during Tuesday’s proceedings, he failed to appear before the court, explaining in a letter that he had travelled to Lagos to seek new legal representation.
Following an application by the DSS, Justice Mohammed Umar revoked Sowore’s earlier bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Earlier, Sowore had asked the judge to withdraw from the case and transfer it to another judge, alleging bias. He cited concerns over previous court proceedings and claimed that his lawyers were unwilling to continue appearing before the court.
The charges against Sowore relate to posts made on August 25, 2025, in response to President Tinubu’s statement in Brazil that his administration had eliminated corruption in Nigeria.
The DSS accused Sowore of violating sections of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, alleging that the posts were capable of causing public disorder and threatening national security.
Sowore pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned in December 2025. The case continues at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
