Gunmen have attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, leaving three people feared dead, including a police officer.
The attackers stormed the institute around 11:40 p.m. on Monday and opened fire on security personnel stationed at the main gate. The attack led to a gun battle between the assailants and security forces.
A NIPSS staff member, who spoke anonymously, said the sound of gunfire woke residents and staff members during the night.
> “I was sleeping when I heard gunshots. When I woke up, I realised the institute was under attack,” the staff member said.
The source added that security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce confrontation, preventing them from gaining access to the main facility.
Two security personnel, including a soldier and a police officer, were reportedly killed at the gate, while another person was also feared dead.
A resident of Kuru, Bulus Haruna, said the attack caused panic in nearby communities as heavy gunfire continued for several minutes.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Efforts to get comments from the Plateau State Police Command and NIPSS authorities were initially unsuccessful.
However, NIPSS later confirmed that a security incident occurred near the institute and said it was quickly brought under control by security agencies.
The institute stated that there was no longer any threat to staff, participants, residents, or facilities, adding that normal activities had resumed.
Security agencies have launched an investigation into the incident.
NIPSS urged the public to rely on official updates and avoid spreading unverified information.
