Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly chosen former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to reports, the development follows weeks of political negotiations within the opposition coalition platform, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The alleged pairing is being described as a strategic move aimed at balancing regional interests, with Atiku expected to fly the presidential ticket while Amaechi serves as his deputy.
Sources within the political camp suggest that the decision comes after intense consultations among key political stakeholders, although Amaechi had earlier indicated he was not pursuing a vice-presidential position.
The report also claims that discussions around the ticket intensified after other major political figures realigned within the coalition, reshaping internal power dynamics.
However, neither Atiku nor Amaechi has officially confirmed the nomination at the time of reporting.
Atiku, in a Democracy Day statement, also criticized the current administration, accusing it of undermining democratic institutions and suppressing opposition voices.
He further called on Nigerians to resist bad governance and defend democratic values, referencing the legacy of the June 12 struggle.
