Apple Reports Record $1.4 Trillion App Store Economy as AI-Driven Apps Surge Worldwide

Apple has announced that its global App Store ecosystem generated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, marking a major milestone in the continued expansion of the digital services economy.

The figures were published in a new study by economists at Analysis Group, highlighting strong growth across digital goods, physical services, and in-app advertising worldwide.

Strong Global Growth Across Categories

According to the report, more than 90% of App Store-related sales did not involve Apple commission fees, underscoring the scale of independent developer earnings within the ecosystem.

The study estimates:

$1.1 trillion from physical goods and services such as retail, food delivery, and travel

$149 billion from digital goods and in-app purchases

$151 billion from in-app advertising revenue

Apple says the ecosystem has nearly tripled in size since 2019, driven largely by increased global smartphone adoption and digital commerce growth.

AI Apps Driving Rapid Expansion

A major highlight of the report is the rapid rise of artificial intelligence applications.

Apps with consumer-facing AI features reportedly experienced four times faster growth in revenue compared to other top apps in 2025, reflecting a global shift toward AI-powered tools in everyday mobile usage.

AI is increasingly being integrated into apps for:

Productivity and automation

Photo and video editing

Health and fitness tracking

Personalized digital services

Global Reach and User Growth

Apple says the App Store now supports more than 850 million weekly users across 175 countries and regions, making it one of the largest digital marketplaces in the world.

The company also noted strong regional differences in app usage, including:

Food delivery leading in parts of Asia

Travel spending dominant in the U.S. and Europe

Grocery services growing strongly in China

Apple Highlights Developer Support

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the milestone reflects the creativity of global developers and Apple’s continued investment in tools and infrastructure.

The company emphasized that it continues to provide development frameworks, AI tools, and platforms such as Xcode and Apple Intelligence to help developers build new applications.

Apple also highlighted ongoing programs including developer academies and global training initiatives aimed at expanding access to app development skills.

Analysts say the continued growth of the App Store ecosystem shows how mobile platforms remain central to global digital commerce, particularly as AI technologies reshape how apps are built and used.

Apple indicated that it expects further expansion as developers increasingly integrate advanced AI capabilities and cloud-based services into consumer apps worldwide.
