Governor Dauda Lawal has described the takeoff of the first Hajj flight from Gusau International Airport as a major milestone in the history of Zamfara State.
The inaugural flight departed on Friday with 415 intending pilgrims aboard a Max Air aircraft bound for Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj exercise.
According to officials, the pilgrims included 288 men and 127 women.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Lawal said the development fulfilled a key promise of his administration and would ease the burden previously faced by pilgrims who had to travel to Kano or Sokoto before boarding flights to Saudi Arabia.
He noted that the airport project began on June 18, 2024, adding that many people doubted it would be completed in time for Hajj operations.
The governor said the direct flight would allow pilgrims to reach Saudi Arabia in less than four hours, making the journey more convenient and comfortable.
Lawal described Gusau International Airport as a legacy project and revealed that discussions were already ongoing with airlines to commence commercial flight operations from the airport.
He also urged the pilgrims to pray for peace, progress, and development in Zamfara State and Nigeria during their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
