The family of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of violating a court order by denying him access to his doctor and family members while in detention.
In a statement released on Friday, Mohammed Bello, son of the former governor, alleged that ICPC officials prevented El-Rufai’s personal doctor from seeing him despite a court ruling granting unrestricted medical access.
According to Bello, the doctor visited the detention facility around 3pm to discuss the results of recent medical examinations conducted on the former governor but was turned away by officials who reportedly demanded written approval from the ICPC chairman.
He described the action as a breach of El-Rufai’s constitutional rights and a disregard for the court’s directive.
Bello also claimed that El-Rufai’s second wife, Aichatou, was denied access to deliver his evening meal after officials informed her that food deliveries were not permitted after 6:30pm.
The family condemned what it described as intimidation under the guise of administrative procedures, insisting that no lawful detention should prevent access to medical care or basic family support.
Mohammed Bello further warned that the family would resist any continued violation of the former governor’s rights and called on authorities to respect all constitutional protections guaranteed to him.
El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 19 over allegations of financial misconduct linked to his tenure as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023.
