At least 55 people have been killed and dozens more injured following a powerful explosion in a village near Myanmar’s border with China, local media and a rebel group controlling the area reported on Saturday.
The blast occurred in Kaung Tat village, an area administered by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which said the explosion was caused by materials stored for mining activities. Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
While the TNLA confirmed multiple fatalities, local news outlets reported that at least 55 people lost their lives, including women and men from the local community. Many others were injured and rushed for treatment.
In a statement, the TNLA expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged support for those affected. The group said emergency relief, medical assistance, and rehabilitation efforts would be provided to survivors and bereaved families.
The explosion took place around midday local time. Officials said an investigation is underway and promised that anyone found responsible for negligence or wrongdoing would be held accountable.
The tragedy has shocked residents of the remote border region, where mining remains a major source of livelihood for many communities.
