Sokoto Councillors Raise ₦50 Million to Back Governor’s Re-election Bid

Councillors across Sokoto State have collectively raised ₦50 million in support of Governor Ahmad Aliyu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The fundraising effort, coordinated by the National Councillors Forum, involved all 244 councillors from the state’s 23 local government areas. The funds are intended to purchase the nomination form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the governor’s second-term ambition.

Chairman of the Forum, Nura Umar Goronyo, said the decision reflects widespread grassroots approval of the governor’s performance.

He noted that many communities have experienced tangible benefits from the administration’s policies, adding that a second term would help consolidate these gains.

A cheque covering the ₦50 million nomination fee has reportedly been prepared and will be formally presented to the governor.

The initiative has been welcomed by the state APC leadership. Party chairman Haruna Sarkin Gobir Adiyya praised the councillors’ action, describing it as a sign of political maturity and strong confidence in the current administration.

Political observers say the move highlights growing grassroots mobilisation and may influence internal party decisions as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
