China has called for an immediate ceasefire in the West Asia region while hosting Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for high-level talks in Beijing.
During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Beijing stressed that renewed fighting is unacceptable and urged all sides to return to dialogue and negotiations. Wang emphasized that the region is at a critical moment and that direct engagement between parties is essential to prevent further escalation.
China also voiced criticism of military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, describing the situation as dangerous and calling for a diplomatic resolution.
Araghchi welcomed China’s position, describing Beijing as a reliable partner and reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to defending its national interests through negotiations. He stated that Iran would seek a fair and comprehensive agreement while rejecting any outcome that undermines its rights.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions following recent clashes and diplomatic disputes. It also precedes a planned summit involving former US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding strategic significance to the timing of the talks.
Recent developments include China and Russia opposing a US-backed resolution at the UN Security Council, as well as ongoing disagreements over sanctions and maritime security linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts say the meeting reflects closer coordination between Beijing and Tehran and highlights China’s growing role in efforts to ease regional tensions through diplomacy.
