Russia has rejected a United States-supported draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that criticized Iran over tensions in the Persian Gulf and maritime security concerns.
Speaking during a UN Security Council discussion on Thursday, Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said Moscow would not support what it described as a “biased” and “confrontational” resolution against Iran.
According to the Russian diplomat, any attempt to single out Iran without addressing broader regional tensions and military activities by the US and its allies would only worsen instability in West Asia.
Nebenzya warned that adopting what he called an “unbalanced narrative” against Tehran could increase tensions across the Middle East and threaten maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Russia also urged members of the UN Security Council to avoid measures that could escalate the crisis and instead focus on dialogue and de-escalation.
Moscow’s position aligns with China’s earlier opposition to similar Western-backed resolutions concerning Iran. Both countries have repeatedly argued that regional security issues should be addressed through diplomacy rather than pressure campaigns.
Iran has maintained that its military and naval activities in the Persian Gulf are defensive and aimed at safeguarding its sovereignty and strategic waterways.
The latest diplomatic dispute comes amid continuing tensions between Tehran and Washington over security, sanctions, and military operations in the region.
