At least three people have died and 20 hikers remain missing after Indonesia’s Mount Dukono erupted on Halmahera Island in North Maluku Province on Friday, authorities said.
According to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, the volcano erupted at about 7:41 a.m. local time, sending a massive ash column nearly 10 kilometres into the sky. Officials said the eruption was accompanied by loud booming sounds and intense volcanic activity.
Search and rescue teams, including police officers and emergency personnel, have been deployed to locate the missing hikers trapped around the volcano area. Local rescue authorities confirmed that several of the hikers are foreign nationals, including visitors from Singapore.
Police in North Halmahera said the victims included two foreigners. Authorities have not yet released their identities.
Officials noted that the hiking area had already been closed to the public since April 17 after increased volcanic activity was detected. Despite the restrictions, some hikers reportedly entered the danger zone.
Residents and tourists have been warned to stay at least four kilometres away from the Malupang Warirang crater, the volcano’s main eruption centre. Authorities also warned communities in nearby Tobelo town about possible volcanic ash rainfall, flying rocks and lava flow risks.
Mount Dukono is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, recording nearly 200 eruptions since March.
