Russia and Ukraine have carried out a new prisoner exchange, with both sides returning 205 prisoners of war in one of the largest swaps seen in recent months.
Russian authorities confirmed that 205 Russian servicemen were released from Ukrainian-controlled territory, while Kyiv received 205 Ukrainian prisoners in return. The exchange comes amid ongoing international efforts to reduce tensions in the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said many of the freed Ukrainians had been held in captivity since 2022, shortly after the war began. He described the operation as the first stage of a wider “1,000-for-1,000” exchange initiative.
Images released after the swap showed emotional scenes as returning prisoners embraced one another while wrapped in Ukrainian national flags. According to Kyiv, those released included fighters involved in the defense of Mariupol and personnel connected to the protection of the Chernobyl area during the early phase of the conflict.
The prisoner exchange follows recent diplomatic discussions involving US President Donald Trump, who had earlier announced plans for a large-scale swap alongside a temporary ceasefire proposal.
Despite continued fighting and accusations of ceasefire violations from both Moscow and Kyiv, prisoner exchanges remain one of the few areas where cooperation between the two sides has continued since the war began in 2022.
Russian officials said the returned soldiers were taken to Belarus, where they are receiving medical and psychological support before returning home.
