Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a major escalation of military operations in Lebanon, vowing to intensify strikes aimed at “crushing” Hezbollah despite an existing ceasefire agreement.
In a video statement, Netanyahu said Israel would increase pressure on the armed group and would not ease its military campaign. Soon after his remarks, Israeli forces launched fresh attacks targeting Hezbollah positions in the Bekaa Valley and other parts of Lebanon.
The escalation triggered panic in parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs, with reports of residents fleeing areas considered Hezbollah strongholds.
The renewed offensive comes as Lebanon marks Liberation Day, commemorating the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon in 2000 after nearly two decades of occupation.
Lebanese authorities reported deadly Israeli strikes in southern regions including Nabatieh and Tyre, where residential buildings and civilian areas were damaged. Lebanon’s health ministry says more than 3,000 people have been killed since open conflict resumed earlier this year.
Far-right Israeli ministers also called for harsher action. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich demanded severe retaliation against Hezbollah drone attacks, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged a return to “full-scale war” in Lebanon.
The latest escalation has raised fears that the fragile ceasefire could collapse completely, pushing the region closer to a broader conflict.
