The United States has carried out new military strikes on targets in southern Iran, even as Iranian negotiators meet with US officials in Qatar to push for a broader peace agreement.
US Central Command said the operation was conducted in “self-defence,” claiming Iranian forces posed threats to American troops and maritime security near the Strait of Hormuz. According to US officials, missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines were targeted.
Iranian sources reported that several members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in the attacks. The strikes mark another escalation despite an official ceasefire that has been in place since April.
The latest developments come as senior Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, arrived in Doha for high-level negotiations aimed at ending the wider conflict between Washington, Israel, and Tehran.
US President Donald Trump said talks were “proceeding nicely” but warned that failure to secure a comprehensive agreement could lead to renewed fighting “bigger and stronger than ever before.”
Iran, however, insisted that while progress had been made in negotiations, a final deal was still far from complete.
