The World Health Organization (WHO) says the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is worsening rapidly, with suspected deaths now reaching 220 and more than 900 suspected infections recorded.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that health officials are “playing catch-up” after delays in identifying and containing the outbreak, adding that the epidemic is currently “outpacing” international response efforts.
The outbreak, linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, began in northeastern DRC and has now spread into neighbouring provinces and across the border into Uganda, where authorities confirmed two additional cases in Kampala, bringing Uganda’s total to seven.
Health officials say there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, raising fears of wider regional transmission. The WHO recently declared the outbreak a global public health emergency.
Efforts to contain the virus have also been complicated by violence and public mistrust. In eastern DRC, angry residents stormed a hospital treating Ebola patients, while other treatment centres were attacked and burned in recent days.
Authorities have imposed restrictions on large gatherings and funeral ceremonies in affected areas as they attempt to slow the spread of the deadly virus.
