Mexico has confirmed it will host Iran’s national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after tensions with the United States complicated the team’s stay in the US.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said FIFA approached Mexico following concerns from Washington over hosting the Iranian squad. The move comes as visa delays and ongoing conflict involving Iran continue to cast uncertainty over the tournament.
Iran is now expected to base itself in Tijuana near the US border, allowing easier travel arrangements ahead of its Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.
The decision follows months of controversy surrounding Iran’s participation, with US President Donald Trump previously questioning whether it was “appropriate” for the Iranian team to remain in the country during the World Cup.
Despite political tensions, Mexico says it has “no problem” accommodating the Iranian delegation as the countdown to the 2026 World Cup continues.
