Pakistan, together with 13 other countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Indonesia, has strongly condemned Somaliland’s reported plan to open a representative office in Jerusalem, calling the move “illegal and unacceptable.”
In a joint statement issued by foreign ministries of the participating states, the countries said the proposed diplomatic step violates international law and United Nations resolutions concerning the status of Jerusalem. They stressed that East Jerusalem remains occupied Palestinian territory and warned that any unilateral action altering its status would have no legal validity.
The coalition also reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, rejecting what it described as attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty through external political arrangements.
The controversy follows Israel’s decision in late 2025 to recognise Somaliland as an independent entity, a move rejected by Somalia and criticised by several countries. Tensions further increased after reports emerged that Somaliland was preparing to establish a diplomatic presence in Jerusalem.
The joint statement added that such actions risk deepening regional tensions and could be interpreted as efforts to normalise disputed territorial claims outside established international frameworks.
Diplomatic observers say the issue reflects wider geopolitical competition involving recognition politics, Middle East alignments, and ongoing disputes over Palestinian territories.
Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia, has sought wider international recognition for years, but remains largely unrecognised by the global community.
