At least 10 civilians have been killed in central Mali after a military drone strike hit a wedding gathering in the San region, according to local officials and witnesses.
Residents said the victims were part of a village celebration when they were struck on Sunday. One community member described the incident as a sudden tragedy that turned a festive occasion into mourning, saying several young people were among the dead.
Security sources indicated that the strike targeted a group of motorbikes moving in procession, which may have drawn the attention of military surveillance drones. However, the vehicles were reportedly linked to a traditional wedding convoy.
A local official confirmed the deaths, stating that civilians were preparing for a communal wedding ceremony when the attack occurred. The exact number of casualties may still rise as assessments continue.
The incident comes amid escalating violence in Mali’s central and northern regions, where government forces are battling armed groups including fighters linked to al-Qaeda’s Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and Tuareg separatist factions.
