Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation has distributed more than N45.88 million in zakat assistance to 132 beneficiaries across 24 locations in Nigeria during its 10th annual zakat distribution programme held at the Abuja National Mosque.
The foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mukhtar Sani Abdulkadir, said the intervention was aimed at easing the growing economic hardship facing many households across the country.
According to him, widows, orphans, indigent persons and low-income earners have been severely affected by inflation, rising transportation costs, expensive healthcare and increasing food prices.
Abdulkadir disclosed that the education sector received the highest allocation, with over N22 million disbursed, while 76 beneficiaries benefited from economic empowerment support worth more than N14 million.
He explained that beneficiaries received items such as grinding machines, sewing machines and deep freezers, alongside direct financial assistance to support household expenses, education and medical needs.
The beneficiaries were drawn from the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory as well as Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi and Osun states.
The foundation said the support programme is expected to help beneficiaries revive small businesses, continue their education, settle medical bills and meet basic living expenses despite the prevailing economic challenges.
Chairman of the foundation, Adamu Bello, noted that the organisation recently faced operational setbacks but has now resumed zakat activities.
He added that the distribution process was delayed because most zakat collections were received towards the end of Ramadan, stressing that the funds were managed with accountability and transparency.
The foundation also called on wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to increase support for vulnerable Nigerians as economic difficulties continue across the country.
