At least 46 people have been killed and more than 70 others injured following a massive explosion at an explosives storage facility in northeastern Myanmar, according to local media reports and a rebel group operating in the area.
The blast occurred on Sunday in Kaung Tat village, located in Shan State near Myanmar's border with China. The exact number of casualties remains unclear, with some rescue workers reporting that the death toll could be as high as 55.
Witnesses said the explosion happened around midday, sending a huge plume of smoke into the sky and triggering a series of secondary blasts. Several homes and buildings were destroyed, while emergency teams continued search and rescue operations throughout the day.
The incident took place in territory controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group that has been fighting for greater autonomy for decades. The TNLA is part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, a coalition of rebel forces engaged in conflict with Myanmar's military government since the 2021 coup.
In a statement, the TNLA confirmed the explosion and said the stored explosives were intended for mining activities in the region, which is known for its valuable ruby deposits. The group acknowledged that the blast caused numerous civilian casualties but did not provide an official death toll.
Authorities within the rebel-controlled area have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and pledged to hold those responsible accountable.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed extensive destruction, with several buildings reduced to rubble and thick smoke rising from the blast.
