The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the deaths of 17 police officers following a terrorist attack on a military training facility in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to police authorities, the attack occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, where officers were undergoing specialised counter-terrorism and tactical training.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said the terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the facility at about 1:15 a.m., attacking from multiple directions. Several soldiers of the Nigerian Army were also reportedly killed while resisting the attack.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the slain officers as courageous personnel committed to national security through advanced operational training. He extended condolences to their families and assured them that the officers’ sacrifices would be remembered.
Following the incident, Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Usman Jibrin, visited the training facility to sympathise with military authorities and surviving officers. He encouraged trainees to remain resilient and complete their programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
The police added that security agencies are continuing joint operations to track down those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
