The United Kingdom has said there are “strong indications” that Iran may have been involved in an alleged security incident at RAF Fairford, a military airbase used by the United States, prompting a strong denial from Tehran.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said investigations into the suspected plot were still ongoing. Five British men in their 20s were arrested near the RAF Fairford base on Sunday on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences. They were released on bail the following day.
Burnham said the UK was working closely with the United States but did not provide details about what the suspects were allegedly planning or the evidence linking Iran to the incident.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly rejected the allegation, saying Tehran had no involvement in the incident and accusing the British government of wrongly linking Iran to the case.
Police said that after three days of investigation, including the deployment of a bomb disposal team, no explosives were found in the suspects’ vehicles, although officers recovered a quantity of petrol.
RAF Fairford, located about 160 kilometres west of London, has been used by US bombers during military operations in the Middle East. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously warned that military bases used to launch attacks against Iran could be considered legitimate targets.
The decision to release the five suspects on bail has also drawn criticism from senior US officials. US President Donald Trump said he would not have released them, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision had disturbed many people.
British counterterrorism chief Laurence Taylor said the suspects remained under investigation and defended the decision to grant bail, saying it was based on investigative strategy and experience.
Investigators are considering whether the suspected offences may have involved individuals acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state.
A report by The Times also said one of the suspects allegedly contacted emergency services shortly before his arrest. Investigators are reportedly considering several possibilities, including whether the incident was an attempt to test security, conduct surveillance or send a message to the British government.
