Saudi, Iranian Diplomats Hold Emergency Talks Amid Regional Escalation

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to discuss escalating regional tensions and diplomatic efforts to contain the ongoing crisis.

According to a statement released by the Saudi Foreign Ministry on Monday, the call was initiated by Araghchi.

The ministry said the two diplomats reviewed recent developments in the region and ongoing efforts to address the situation. However, it did not disclose specific details of their discussions or any agreements reached.

The conversation comes amid rising military tensions in the Middle East, including attacks on Saudi civilian infrastructure and disruptions to international maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Deadly Attack on Riyadh Airport

The diplomatic engagement follows a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday, which reportedly killed 13 people and injured hundreds.

Yemeni government forces on Sunday blamed the Houthi movement for the attack and vowed to launch a decisive military response.

The attack has heightened security concerns across the region, with Saudi Arabia facing repeated threats to its infrastructure.

Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

Meanwhile, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues to face significant disruptions following navigation restrictions imposed by Iran in April 2026.

The restrictions followed the outbreak of war involving the United States, Israel and Iran in February 2026.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route through which a substantial share of the world's oil supplies passes.

The latest discussions between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers highlight ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the worsening regional security situation as military confrontations and maritime disruptions continue.
