Over 1,000 Islamic Clerics Ask Tinubu to Drop 2027 Re-election Bid

Over 1,000 Islamic Clerics Ask Tinubu to Drop 2027 Re-election Bid

More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential election, citing economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and other challenges confronting Nigerians.

The call was contained in a communique issued at the end of a national conference titled “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections,” held in Kano State on Sunday.

The clerics, under the umbrella of Ko Da Naka…For the Struggle to Promote Good Governance and Community Development, in collaboration with the AFAQ Educational Foundation, expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Tinubu administration.

They criticised several economic policies of the Federal Government, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, changes to the naira exchange-rate system, increases in electricity tariffs and tax reforms.

According to the clerics, the policies have worsened economic hardship for ordinary Nigerians while the government continues to prioritise revenue generation despite rising living costs and unemployment.

The communique stated that it would be inappropriate to re-elect the Tinubu administration in 2027 if the government failed to review what the participants described as harmful economic policies.

The clerics also expressed concern over the continued killings, kidnappings and terrorist attacks across the country, particularly in the North-West.

They urged the government to take urgent and decisive measures to address the worsening insecurity.

The communique further called on President Tinubu to refrain from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

It warned that if he chose to contest, citizens should reject his candidacy and support candidates they believe could provide better leadership for the country.

The call comes amid endorsements of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima by some Islamic groups, including the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) and the Qadiriyya Sufi order, ahead of the 2027 election.

Some of the clerics who presented papers at the conference included Dr Abdulmuɗɗalib Ahmad Giɗaɗo, Prof. Muhd Muslim Ibrahim, Sheikh Kabir Bashir Abdulhamid, Dr Aminu Isma’il Sagagi, Dr Najibullah Abdallah Nuhu, Sheikh Abdurrazaq Uba Musa, Sheikh Musa Muhd Ɗan Kwano, Barrister El-Zubair, Dr Yahuza Getso, Prof. Ibrahim Siraj Adhama, Dr Umar Dokaji and Sheikh Muhd Sani Khamis (Abu Haisam).
