The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with a clash between farmers and herders in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area, which left one person dead and several houses burnt.
The deceased, identified as Usman Jibrin, 40, reportedly died while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the police, the incident occurred on September 23, 2026, when three farmers from Guda Village went to their farms on Guda Hill and discovered that cattle belonging to a herder were grazing on and destroying their crops.
The farmers reportedly chased the cattle to the herders' settlement, where an argument broke out and escalated into a fight, leaving the three farmers injured.
Habib said that some youths from the village later mobilised in retaliation and set several houses in the herders' settlement ablaze.
He explained that officers from the Ningi Police Division responded to the incident, restored normalcy and evacuated the injured farmers to the General Hospital in Ningi for medical treatment.
However, one of the injured farmers later died while receiving treatment.
The police spokesman said four suspects were arrested on October 8, 2026, following intelligence-led operations.
The suspects were arrested over alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, arson and culpable homicide.
Habib added that the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had ordered the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation.
The commissioner also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and those whose properties were destroyed during the incident.
Aliyu assured residents that the police would ensure justice was served and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
He further urged communities across the state, particularly farmers and herders, to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence to prevent similar incidents in the future.
