A 35-year-old Nigerian man, Edikan Adiakpan, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison in the United States for his involvement in an email fraud scheme.
According to a report by The PUNCH, Adiakpan's prison sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release, following a ruling by US District Judge Andrew Hanen in Houston, Texas.
A statement released by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas on Thursday disclosed that Adiakpan pleaded guilty to the offence on May 12.
During the court hearing, evidence showed that between 2020 and 2022, Adiakpan used a company he controlled, known as Akama Lifestyle, which he advertised as a luxury car service, to facilitate the transfer of funds for fraudsters.
The report stated that he received a percentage of the money transferred as payment for his services.
It also revealed that Adiakpan had temporary legal status to remain in the United States at the time of his arrest.
