Google’s September 2026 spam update has caused significant movement in search rankings, with the biggest impact reported over the weekend of September 25–27.
The update was announced by Google on September 24 and is expected to take about two weeks to complete. Although the rollout is still ongoing, search-ranking monitoring tools recorded substantial volatility, particularly on Saturday, September 26.
SEO experts have reported major ranking declines affecting websites across different industries and countries. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable said the latest spam updates appear to be having a greater impact than some previous spam updates.
The specific tactics targeted by the update have not yet been fully confirmed. However, early observations from SEO analysts suggest that highly templated, programmatically generated and potentially AI-generated pages may be among those affected.
SEO consultant Glenn Gabe reported significant drops across several websites and highlighted examples involving AI-generated and programmatically produced websites. Lily Ray also noted early signs that sites containing large numbers of highly templated pages could be experiencing negative effects.
Google has not publicly identified a single specific spam tactic as the focus of the update. Website owners and SEO professionals are therefore being advised to monitor their search performance closely while the two-week rollout continues.
The full impact of the September 2026 spam update is expected to become clearer after Google completes the rollout.
