Elon Musk Returns to US Government to Advise Pentagon on Future Warfare

Tech billionaire Elon Musk is set to return to an official advisory role with the United States government, where he will co-lead a Pentagon study examining the future of warfare.

Musk previously headed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) before leaving the position in May 2025 following a highly publicised disagreement with US President Donald Trump.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the initiative, known as Project Meridian, during a speech at the Quantico military base. He described it as an effort to bring together some of America’s leading innovators, military experts and technology specialists to examine the future of warfare.

Musk will co-lead the project alongside Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of defence technology company Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich, the 83-year-old former Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

According to Hegseth, Project Meridian will focus on identifying future areas of military competition and the capabilities the United States needs to develop.

The project will involve selected private-sector leaders and experts from the technology, academic and policy sectors. Hegseth has instructed the team to complete its findings and submit a report within 120 days.

Musk was previously a prominent supporter of Trump and contributed significantly to efforts surrounding his return to the White House. However, their relationship later deteriorated following disagreements over the president’s spending legislation.

Musk has since resumed financial support for Republican candidates and conservative political groups.
